Monotonous Too stressed to be blessed Anxious Living your life check to check It’d be easier to pass, avoid the day to day A pill prescription for your cure Now smile On vacation, enjoying your meal until The cost, my God, what is the cost? You can’t afford this, what is the cost? Working for another’s dream Their stress is your stress, they fail you fail, you win, but They win bigger Gold star for your efforts And your dreams? When did you forget them? Left by the wayside for your Job security A new job Two weeks paid vacation per year 365 days You’re burnt out, take a deep breath The monotony You quit, two weeks notice You OWE them that At interviews Explain the gaps—red flags—on your résumé It’s all the same, be different Tell them about That time you quit your job Red flag And traveled for three months Red flag How it changed you, how you’re wiser and have a Different perspective on the world and how things Could be better, or… Lie and say what’s needed to get the job The paycheck, the health insurance, the savings, the retirement You are RESPONSIBLE Round of applause for your efforts Oh, and don’t forget to have some children Then work some more to provide for your kids You’ll retire at 65 or perhaps even later, that’ll be fun Tell your posterity to follow suit, it’s the key to life Make sure they do what you did, it is the way Believe in god, work hard, go to school, get married Then work, and work, and work
This second poem was inspired by a lyric (the title of the poem) from Life is Simple in the Moonlight by The Strokes and was written in late 2019:
…no one I disapprove of more or root for more than myself
I fade, I fall, I cry, I crawl I dream, I desire, if only to aspire Regrets weigh me down, swimming, I try not to drown I search for hope within me, it’s there, my saving crown I dread accomplishment, too elusive, I fear Present goals, how to obtain, not too clear I need resolve, I need more spirit Somehow, I know I’m near it Peace and validation evades, like the Devil, they’re out to get me How can I convince them, like Jesus, to accept me Recreate my new beginning Soon, I hope to be winning With teary eyes, I leave my family Fuck regrets, don’t try to stop me
